Lesson 10: Cultural Bumps Flashcards
what is a cultural bump?
this occurs when people expect one type of behavior, and cross-cultural interactions result in something different
what is needed to navigate cultural bumps
an MI must develop cultural competence
what is cultural competence
the ability to function effectively in the context of cultural differences
what are one person’s actions or communication determined by
they are determined by that person’s active culture
what is cultural relativity
the idea that behavior must be evaluated and understood within the cultural context where it occurred
what does cultural relativity help people understand
cultural relativity helps us to understand that people from different cultures may see a situation from completely different perspectives
what are generalizations
a general statement or assumption based on past experience or general knowledge
how can generalizations be useful in the healthcare setting
generalizations are useful to promote general understanding between the patient and the provider
what are stereotypes
an oversimplified image or idea of a person, culture or concept
generalizations can lead to?
stereotypes
why are stereotypes dangerous
they are dangerous because each person in a cultural group has a unique individual active culture which means that generalizations that can apply to a group do not apply to that specific person
why is it important for an MI to differentiate between generalizations and stereotypes
MI must recognize difference between generalizations (useful too to anticipate cultural misunderstandings) and stereotypes (ineffective tool that makes inaccurate and harmful assumptions)
