Cultural Diversity
The existence of a variety of cultures or ethnic groups within a society
-culture can relate to nationality, race, age and traditions
* Globalisation has increased this around the world
Why is cultural diversity greater in cities
- Cultural diversity results largely from immigration and immigrants are more likely to choose to live in urban areas

Benefits of cultural diversity?
- Greater exposure people can get to different foods, music, language and religion
-should increase tolerance of other cultures
Issues associated with cultural diversity?
- Can put pressure on already stretched urban services
- Authorities may need to provide english lessons
- Potential segregation, resistance, tension
Ethnic segregation
In some European and North American cities, different ethnic communities have become isolated from wider society
-they have maintained their own language and beliefs with limited interaction with others
Self regualting factors causing ethnic segregation
- Migrants may seek support and security of living near friends and family
- Provision of specialist facilities like places of worship and food shops
- Protection against racism from majority population
External factors causing ethnic segregation
- Migrants are seen as cheap labour, forces them into areas of cheap housing
- Movements of majority populations out of the area (white flight)
- Discrimination with housing and mortgages
How can ethnic segregation be managed?
- A policy of interculturalism has been promoted by some
- In the UK, there is legeslation on anti-racism, employment rights and opportunities

- Resulted in massive economic inequality
- White-flight to the suburbs process caused a high concentratuon of deprived areas
- 8 mile road enhances the segregation
