Lesson 25- Sheffield Sustainability Flashcards

1
Q

Is Sheffield improving in a sustainable way

A

“We’ve been experiencing more flash floods in recent years,” says Ogden from Sheffield council.
-“So we need to keep the water in the river and make more space for it. Culverts act as a kind of choke on the river, so any blockages or sudden increased rainfall forces the water out onto the streets.”

-has led to more sustainable changes to the Porter Brooke River which has green, gradually rising river banks

How have CO2 emissions changed in Sheffield over time?

A

-Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the city have reduced by 34% in the period 2005 to 2015.
-due to the decarbonisation of the energy produced nationally (movement away from coal power).

Q

How is Sheffield reducing its CO2 emissions?

A

-The Council has improved the insulation used in all of their managed housing (40,000 homes).

-Sustainable energy is generated in the city by Veolia. As well as this, e.on’s biomass plant at Blackburn Meadows (near Meadowhall) and UYE’s biomass plant at Holbrook (near Crystal Peaks) will produce a combined energy output of 16.5MW.

-With 12% of Sheffield residents living in fuel poverty (spending more than 10% of earnings on energy), cheap and local energy have also help lower costs and alleviate this issue.
-It could add an extra £600m each year to the local economy. This may be affected by current rising fuel costs however.

Q

Why is transport such a big issue in Sheffield?

A

-Around 60,000 people commute to work in Sheffield every day
-Obsession with car journeys (67% of all journeys taken by car)
40% of work journeys are less than 5km.
-This is considered walkable for most people.
-Public transport is massively underused (1% of journeys via tram, 2% via train and 9% via bus).

Q

How are Sheffield specifically reducing CO2 emissions through transport?

A

Stagecoach and First Buses (main two providers in Sheffield) now have a fleet of hybrid buses.
-Cuts carbon emissions by 30%.
-Each bus will use 20,000 fewer gallons of diesel a year.

Sheffield SuperTram is part of the city’s low-carbon integrated transport system.
-Commuters are encouraged to leave their car on the outskirts of the city and travel the rest via tram.
-This will reduce the city’s carbon emissions through reduced congestion and air pollution.
