- Cities consume 75% of the world resources and generate the majority of the worlds waste and pollution.
- Cities pose a threat to both the local and global environments
- Local issues in cities are waste disposal and pollution
- Global issues now rely on emergy and resources from all over the world so therefore waste is disposed everywhere
7
Q
Dimensions of sustainability
A
- Idea was brought to wider public awareness in the 1987 Bruntland report called “Our Common Future”.
- People centred planning has increasingly been incorporated into sustainable urban design and the notion of livability is important here, which means different things to different people.
-for some its tied to natural ammenities such as parks and green spaces

- Renewable resources used
- Public transport accessible and used reliably and as an alternate to driving
13
Q
Difference between a sustainable and unsustainable city?
A
- In a sustainable the city the outputs are minimised.
- Carbon and water cycles are used in the design and planning of the city.
- Afforestation of upper-course river catchments is used to protect the city in the lower-course.

Q
CASE STUDY OF SUSTAINABLE CITY-Freiburg, Germany
A
- Freiburg, a city of about 220,000 people and 155 km2of land, is located in the southwest corner of Germany, at the edge of the Black Forest and near the borders with France and Switzerland.

Q
CASE STUFDY OF SUSTAINABILITY-What Freiburg did
A
- In 1969 Freiburg devised its first integrated traffic management plan and cycle path network. The plan is updated every 10 years.
- It prioritizes traffic avoidance and gives preference to environment
-friendly modes of transport such as walking, cycling, and public transit. - The inner city district of Vauban is considered the pinnacle of Freiberg’s sustainability
- Built on the site of a former army barracks, it now houses 5500 people in low-energy buildings.
