What is happening to HIC cities regarding urbanisation?
HIC’s have seen a slower rate of urbanisation in the last few decades and some cities have even seen a decline in numbers
Suburbanisation
The movement of people from living in the inner parts of a city to living on the outer edges

What acctually is suburbanisation
- As suburbs grow, they attract more people from the inner city who are attracted by the greater amount of space
-also attracts people from rural areas - Results in the physical expansion of a city into surrounding countryside areas
- Industries also suburbanise due to cheaper land (decentralisation)
Push factors
- Increasing traffic and pollution in urban centre
- More crime, lower quality schooling
- Deindustrialisation
- Poor quality housing built in industrial revolution
Pull factors
- Greater open spaces and nicer views from homes
- Wider range of employment opportunities
- Lower house prices compared to urban centre
- Less air pollution, better health
- Inner city shopping centres developing in suburbs

- Face to face interaction has been replaced by e-conferencing
Are all suburbs the same?
The time when they were built, the planners involved, the surrounding physical environment can all influence the characteristics of a suburb
Impacts of suburbanisation
- Increasing social segregation as the wealthy are in the suburbs and the poor are in the inner city
- Wealth and Race, Detroit USA
- Diversion of funding away from the city centre for new infrastructure and services
- Tax base in inner city decreases-urban decline-less quality services and investment
