Process where a greater proportion of people in a given country live in urban areas as apposed to rural areas

What is happening to UK’s population?
- 75% of populatiopn live in urban areas but the number isnt changing
- but is experiancing urban growth
Distribution of urbanisation?
- Took 10,000 yaers for 1 billion to dwell in urban areas and took the next billion only 25 years
- High in Northern America,Latin America and Europe
- Africa and Asia remain rural
- Mega cities on the rise

Movement of people from rural to urban areas
-LIC’s tend to have more push factors
-Nairobi is home to 8.4% of Kenyas population but accounts for 25% of countries GDP
Pull factors of urban areas
- Employment in service is payed better than work in rural areas, increasingly high demand for unskilled labour-Economic
- Perceived better quality of life in the city by the media-Social
- Better education, healthcare, entertainment and tourism-Social
Push factors of urban areas
- Population growth>resource depletion-Social/Demographic
- Agriculture is being organised globally-Economic
- Wars and civil strife cause people to flee their land-Political
How did urban growth happen originally in the uk?
- Agricultural revelation-loss of work and surplus of food for town; mechanisation,technological change
- Industrial process- labour brought in from the countryside into factories
- New power-coal took over from water power-mining areas
Urbanisation and women
Social Mobility: Urban environments allow women to break free from traditional roles and norms. They can pursue education, careers, and personal aspirations.
