Q
Why were dictators elected occasionallly in Rome?
A
Republican Rome was normally ruled by two consuls, each of whom had the right to command an army. Their powers were limited constitutionallly and by the fact that two of them shared equal power. In times of great emergency to the state, the Senate could appoint a dictator with absolute and sole power.
