Lesson 7: Pavlovian Conditioning Flashcards
unconditioned stimulus (US)
the food
unconditioned response (UR)
salivating
neutral stimulus
the sound of the tuning fork
conditioned stimulus (CS)
the sound of the tuning fork after being associated with food then getting rid if the food and just doing the tuning fork
conditioned response (CR)
the salivating as a response to the sound of the tuning fork and not food
Little Albert
Watson and Rayner
had a white rat (US) hang out with Albert. He’s fine (UR). Introduce white rat and at the same time make a loud noise behind Albert. Albert cries. Show Albert the rat (CS) with no noise and Albert freaks out (CR).
CS-
conditioned stimulus that makes you think a painful or negative thing will happen
CS+
conditioned stimulus that makes you think a positive thing will happen
Generalized gradient
e.g. Little Albert scared of rats, but also scared of anything furry and white.
Aversive Counter-Conditioning
instead of making a CS positive, you make it negative.
e.g. antabuse for alcoholic
CS+ turns into CS-
Taste aversion conditioning
eat too much of a favorite food or get sick after eating a food, even the sight/smell of the food makes you nauseous even though it wasn’t the source of the illness.
CS+ turns into CS-
Extinction
the CS will no longer create the CR if it isn’t enforced
