Lesson 10: Differential Reinforcement Flashcards
Differential Reinforcement definition
desired behavior–>give reinforcement
problem behavior–>do extinction
Requirements of Differential Reinforcement
two or more physically different behaviors
occurring in one situation
one behavior is reinforced
all other are extinguished

b2 c2 x decrease
Algorithm
1) whose behavior?
2) what behavior? Is there more than one behavior?
3) Is there a consequence
4) change in rate of behavior?
5) what is the question asking?
The physical (muscles) ways to decide if there are 2 behaviors
different physical movements of muscle
the same muscles at different speeds
the same muscles at different strengths
The verbal ways to decide if there are 2 behaviors
talking about different topics
saying different words
pronouncing a word correctly and incorrectly
What are the different types of differential reinforcement?
differential reinforcement of alternative behavior (DRA), differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO), and differential reinforcement of incompatible behavior (DRI)
Differential Reinforcement of Alternative behavior (DRA)
desired behavior—>reinforcement
problem behavior—>extinction
Differential Reinforcement of Other behavior (DRO)
problem behavior—>extinction
e.g. “if you don’t beg for x min., I’ll buy you a snack”
Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible behavior (DRI)
problem behavior—>extinction
incompatible behavior—>reinforcement
e.g. parental praise for eating with good manners (incompatible with eating like a slob)
Low Rate behavior
high rate—>extinction
low rate—>reinforcement
never earn reinforcement if you make behavior too many times
High Rate behavior
high rate—>reinforcement
low rate—>extinction
behavior isn’t a problem, but the rate is unacceptably low
Creativity behavior
some people claim that reinforcement based interventions stifle creativity
give reinforcement whenever something unique is done.
