Lesson 7: Digestion Flashcards
What is the function of the mouth?
- Mechanical digestion with the teeth.
- Salivary glands release amylase: carbohydrase enzyme.
What is the wave-like contraction that moves the globule of food down the oesophagus called?
The wave-like contraction is called peristalsis.
What is the function of the stomach?
- Plummets food with muscular walls
- Releases pepsin (protease enzyme.)
- Produces hydrochloric acid to kill bacteria and provide environment for pepsin.
What is the function of the pancreas?
- Produces lipase, protease, carbohydrase enzymes.
- Secretes into small intestine as pancreatic fluid.
What is the function of bile?
- Neutralizes stomach acid for enzymes in small intesine.
- Emulsifies fats
What is “emulsification?”
Emulsification is the breakdown of large fat droplets into small droplets.
What does emulsifying fats do?
- Breaking down large droplets into smaller droplets.
- Increasing the surface area.
- Increasing the rate of fat breakdown by lipase.
What does neutralizing stomach acid do?
- Creates optimum pH for enzymes in small intestine.
- Increase the rate of fat breakdown by lipase
What is the function of the small intestine?
- Absorbs food into the blood by diffusion.
What enzymes does the small intestine release?
- Protease, amylase (carbohydrase) ,lipase.
What is the function of the large intestine?
- Absorbs excess water –> (into bloodstream) producing faeces.
What is the function of the rectum?
- Faeces are stored here until they pass out of the anus.
What is the function of the gall bladder?
- Bile is stored here before secreted into small intestine.
Give 3 main types of tissue
- Glandular tissue
- Epithelial tissue
- Muscular tissue
What is glandular tissue?
- A group of cells that secrete digestive juices (enzymes) to break down food.
