Lesson 11: Anaerobic respiration Flashcards
What is anaerobic respiration?
Anaerobic respiration: Chemical reaction that releases energy from glucose only.
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in animals?
Glucose –> lactic acid
What is the issue with lactic acid, formed as a product of anaerobic respiration?
Builds up in muscles.
Causes muscle pain/ fatigue.
What type of respiration releases more energy?
- Aerobic respiration releases more energy.
Where does anaerobic respiration take place?
Anaerobic respiration: Cytoplasm
What is fermentation?
Fermentation is anaerobic respiration in plants and yeast.
What is the word equation for fermentation?
Glucose –> ethanol + carbon dioxide
What conditions are needed for anaerobic respiration to take place?
Air- tight–> not allow any oxygen so aerobic respiration doesn’t occur.
What is ethanol from fermentation used for?
Ethanol –> used in alcohol (eg. beer)
What is carbon dioxide from fermentation used for?
Carbon dioxide –> make bred rise
