Lesson 19: Antibiotics Flashcards
Why would you use over the counter medication (eg. paracetemol?)
- To treat symptons of disease.
What do antibiotics do?
- Kill bacteria in the body.
Why don’t antibotics treat viruses?
- Viruses replicate inside the cell.
- The antibiotics aren’t able to reach the virus.
What are the steps of the antibiotic practical?
- Take a swab of bacteria
- Rub it onto agar dish( petri dish with gelatin on it)
- Take the soaked antibiotics/ water and put on the dish.
- Leave for 10 minutes and then measure diameter of clear zone.
What is the area that is clear around the dish called?
- Clear zone/ zone of inhibition.
What is the independent variable in the experiment?
Type of antibiotic
What is the dependent variable in the experiment?
Diameter of clear zone.
What is the control variable?
How long it’s left, volume of antibiotic solution added.
Why is water used in the practical?
- Shows that the clear zone won’t be made with any substance, only antibitoics.
What are painkillers?
A drug that blocks nerve impulses to treat symtons of a disease.
What is an antiseptic?
- Antiseptic cleans skin from bacteria.
What does a disinfectant do?
A disinfectant cleans surfaces.
Treats existing illness.
What do antibiotics do?
Antibiotics stop/ slow down the growth of bacteria internally.
What is antibiotic resistance?
Antibiotic resistance is when someone takes too many antibiotics so the pathogen becomes resistant to the antibiotic. If one becomes resistant to the environment it is in, it can reproduce through natural selection.
