In the middle ages, the church provided an alternate justice system through the benefit of the clergy and sanctuary .
For early modern period, church itself became less powerful

Benefit of the clergy = Henry VII allowed non clergy BOC once and people were branded to show they had received the privilege.
Edward made serious crime like murder exempt from benefit of clergy so everyone including clerics were tried in secular courts.
Sanctuary = Henry VIII stopped exile abroad for those claiming sanctuary, instead they had to keep to designated sanctuaries.
in 2623, James I abolished sanctuary altogether.
