When did population increase and what happened as it increased?
A
- Towns grew through 13th and 14th century which meant more opportunity for crime so a more centralised approach was needed and role of GOV and authority was increased

Change and continuity in later medieval England and role of local communities
A
Continuity = Hue and cry system and tithing continued
Continuity = if juries could not reach a verdict , trial by ordeal and combat continued to be used a informal punishments
Change = From 1250s, parish constables led the chase for criminals after hue and cry was given .They arrested suspects.
Change = Some towns also had night watch in which volunteers would patrol the streets. If suspected criminals were caught = handed over to constable.

Change and continuity in later medieval England and role of Gov-appointed officials
A
- Change = Knights were appointed by Richard I as keepers of peace in unruly areas, this was later extended to more areas
- Change = Following justices of the peace act (1361) role of keeper of peace evolved to jps who had the power to hear minor crimes in small courts 4x a year
- Change = Role of sheriff expanded. They were now expected to track down criminals if hue and cry didn’t work out.
