A
- Fines and compensation were most common
- System of paying compensation to victims of crime = wergild
- Corporal punishment were fairly common but capital punishments were usually rare.

- Breaking forest laws was now harshly punished = blinding , castration

- Use of capital punishment gradually decreased although crimes against authority were still harshly punished
- Corporal punishments were widely used although juries did not convict neighbours unless they regularly offended
- fines became more common

Why did punishments vary?
A
- They depended on class and gender, commoners treated differently to nobles, women treated differently to men.
Good example of this could be =
- Amount of wergild payable in Anglo - Saxons depended on victims social status, wergild for nobles = huge sum compared to serf
- For later medieval period, commoners hanged, nobles usually beheaded
