  • Use of capital punishment gradually decreased although crimes against authority were still harshly punished
  • Corporal punishments were widely used although juries did not convict neighbours unless they regularly offended

Why did punishments vary?

A
  • They depended on class and gender, commoners treated differently to nobles, women treated differently to men.

Good example of this could be =
- Amount of wergild payable in Anglo - Saxons depended on victims social status, wergild for nobles = huge sum compared to serf

  • For later medieval period, commoners hanged, nobles usually beheaded
