Lesson 5B (Part 2) Flashcards
Arthritis
Inflammatory disorder that involves one or more joints
Rheumatoid arthritis
Autoimmune disease wherein the body produces antibodies against joint tissues
What does rheumatoid arthritis cause? (4)
- Chronic inflammation
- Joint damage
- Pain
- Loss of mobility
Osteoporosis
Thinning of the bones with reduction in bone mass die to depletion of calcium and bone protein
- porous bone
What is common with osteoporosis? (2)
- Hip fractured
2. Collapsed vertebrae
Muscular dystrophy
Muscles progressively weaken
- abnormal condition of nutrition or growth
- group of inherited diseases
Carpal tunnel Syndrome
Repetitive strain injury
- inflammation in nerves that pass the wrist
Tendonitis
Inflammation of a tendon
- repetitive strain injury
- poor blood supply
- long healing process
Bursitis
Inflammation of the bursa
Where is bursitis frequently seen? (2)
- Elbow
2. Knee
Rotator cuff tear
Muscles surrounding the shoulder joint involved in rotating the shoulder are injured
What can cause a rotator cuff tear?
Hard, fast movements
- eg) tennis or baseball
Arthroscopy
A fiberoptic instrument is introduced into a joint cavity in order to visualize surfaces of the bone
Bone scintigraphy
A small amount of radioactive element is introduced into the blood stream
Bone scan
Nuclear imaging test to find abnormalities of bone
What does a bone scan show? (2)
- Bone cancer
2. Sources of inflammation
Electromyography
A recording of muscle electrical activity
What is electromyography useful in evaluating?
Cause of diagnosing muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular disorders
Orthopaedists
“to straighten up children”
Orthopaedicts
Is a surgical subspecialty in treating musculoskeletal deformities in children
- also treats adults with complicated bone fractures, damage tendons or ligaments
What are 6 examples of medical problems physical therapist rehabilitation specialists see?
- Patients recovering from joint surgery
- Limb amputation
- Stroke
- Heart attack
- Chronic neuromuscular diseases
- Post injuries to muscles, ligaments and tendons
What do physical therapist-rehabilitation specialist teach? (2)
- Their patients to exercise, strengthen their body and increase mobility
- How to prevent re-injury
Podiatrists
Surgical subspecialists in diseases and structural problems of the feet
- foot doctor
What can cause foot problems?
Systemic disease such as diabetes
- can cause foot ulcers (dont heal well)
Rheumatologist
Studies the flux of fluids
- treat joint diseases
Rheuma
Watery discharge
What does rheumatologist also treat in patients? (4)
- Osteoporosis
- Tendonitis
- Gout
- Lupus
Myoma
Muscle tumour
Myalagia
Muscle pain
Arthroscope
Instrument to visualize a joint space
