Hormone replacement therapy
What is hormone replacement therapy?
It is a supplement with estrogen alone or estrogen and progesterone in combination during and after menopause
What happens during menopause? (2)
- There is a decrease in estrogen and progesterone
2. Ovaries no longer producing adequate amounts of these hormones
What are some symptoms of menopause? (3)
- Hot flashes
- Vaginal dryness
- Night sweats
What does estrogen help with? (4)
- To thicken up the endometrium
- Influences the way the body uses calcium
- Maintains healthy level of cholesterol
- Keeps vagina healthy
What can lowered or fluctuating levels of estrogen lead to? (2)
- Menopausal symptoms

What can HRT relieve?
Some of the symptoms related to menopause
Why is progesterone taken?
In combination with estrogen in women who still have their uterus
What happens if estrogen is take alone?
It increases the risk for endometrial cancer
What makes the lining of the uterus shed each month?
Progesterone
What happens if estrogen and progesterone are taken together continuously?
No bleeding occurs
What are the Types of HRT? (2)
- Estrogen therapy
- lowest dose to relieve symptoms - Progesterone/Progestin-Estrogen Therapy
What are examples of estrogen therapy? (3)
- Pill
- Patch
- Cream
What is progestin?
A synthetic form of progesterone
What are the risks of HRT? (4)
- Increased risk of endometrial cancer
- if not taking progesterone - Increased risk of stroke and blood clots
- Increased risk of Breast cancer when taking estrogen-progestin combo
- Increased risk of heart disease
