Lesson 11 - Chapter 3: Mobile Ports and Accessories Flashcards
What type of connector does an Android device typically need?
USB-A mini or USB-A micro connector in the past but USB C is the newer standard
What is the lightning connector?
an 8-pin connector used on many Apple devices, not keyed to be inserted a certain way (like USB C)
How does Apple prevent widespread production of fake Lighting connectors?
it contains a small chip that identifies it as a true Lightning connector
(cables without the chip won’t work or will have limited use)
What technology does USB Type-C support (doesn’t have to) and up to what data transfer speeds?
USB C can support USB 3.1 technology
Data transfer speeds up to 10 Gbps
What should you make sure you don’t assume when it comes to Type-C?
that it uses a specific version of USB
(it can use 3.1 or it can be using 2.0, who knows)
What is Bluetooth?
Short-range wireless technology that can be used for personal area networking, connections to peripherals, etc
Bluetooth implementation in mobile devices generally have a range of no more than….?
10 meters (about 33 feet)
Why do most mobile devices have Bluetooth discovery disabled by default?
to conserve battery life
(Bluetooth discovery and completed pairing uses electricity)
What is NFC? How does it work?
Near-field communication (NFC) uses chips embedded in mobile devices that create electromagnetic fields when these devices are close to each other
What’s the typical range for NFC?
a few centimeters to a few inches
What can NFC be used for? (3)
exchange contact info, small files, payment transactions
What is a touch pen?
a stylus, a handheld pointing device that can be used to draw on a touchscreen more precisely
What can merchants attach to a smartphone to enable quick credit card transactions?
a magnetic reader or chip reader attached to a smartphone
