Lesson 1 - Chapter 3: Display Adapters Flashcards
Since a processor like a GPU or CPU needs their own RAM, you might see VRAM described as what other term?
GDDR (Graphic Double Data Rate)
for example:
16 GB of GDDR6 RAM
A video card installed on an expansion slot on the motherboard typically uses what slot?
PCIe x16
(for fast connection to the PC’s CPU and RAM)
What is a mode?
any single combo of resolution and color depth you set for your system
What is color depth?
the number of bits used to describe color (16 colors = 4 bits)
Modern = 16.7 million colors = 24 bits
What is aspect ratio?
the ratio of width to height
1024 x 768 = 4:3 ratio
For integrated graphics, where is the GPU located?
on a separate chip installed on the motherboard or integrated with the motherboard’s chipset
What are the 2 most influential factors affecting a display adapter’s performance?
- graphics processor (GPU)
- video memory (VRAM)
What is ClearType?
a Windows feature that is designed to improve the look of text in some apps when you adjust the scaling for text/icons
What is bit depth?
the same as color depth (can’t change bit depth in modern Windows)
A display adapter has these 4 basic subsystems:
- Connectors
- a GPU
- VRAM
- Connectivity between GPU and VRAM
A Display Mode is a combination of what?
Resolution, color depth, and refresh rate
What are 3 modern display standards?
- HD
- FHD
- UHD 4k
What are 3 ways display adapters can come in?
- As a video card
- As a GPU chip on the motherboard
- As a CPU (GPU?) built into the CPU
(dedicated vs integrated)
Besides a PCIe x16 motherboard slot, what else would a video card need?
additional PCI power connector if required
What type of monitor requires an inverter to supply AC power to the backlights?
an LCD monitor with CCFL backlights
