Lesson 11 - Chapter 1: Mobile Computing Devices Flashcards
What’s the easy way to tell a 2-in-1 convertible laptop PC from a tablet mobile device?
If the OS is designed specifically for mobile devices
What OS does a true mobile device run?
Apple iOS or Google Android
(opposed to desktop OS such as Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, or some form of Linux distribution such as Ubuntu)
What is a smartphone?
a hand-held computer that also functions as a phone
What are tablets?
run the same/similar OS as smartphones and usually lack a cellular connection and rely on Wi-Fi
(basically like large smartphones without the phone)
What is an e-reader?
a device specifically designed for reading electronic books
(longer battery life, screens designed for comfortable reading in different lighting conditions)
What 2 purposes do wearable devices have?
- collecting more information about our lives
- provide interfaces that integrate data/tech with daily life
Do most smart watches have their own cellular connection?
No, they usually rely on being paired with a smartphone and shares the data
Fitness monitors are not always ___. They can also be what 2 things?
watches.
They can be fobs that clip to your body (just count steps) or fitness wristbands (many features)
What is system on a chip (SoC)?
combines a CPU, GPU and other support logic onto a single silicon die
What does ARM stand for?
Advanced RISC machine
What type of CPU are used in mobile devices (tablets, etc)?
ARM chips
What is ARM? (learned in Prep 1) accepts what?
Advanced RISC (reduced information set computer) Machine is a CPU that accepts a reduced set of commands in exchange for faster and more efficient processing
ARM chips are used on what kind of devices?
on devices that need to do a few things extremely well (rather than a lot of things moderately well)
What type of CPUs are used in laptops and desktops?
CISC CPUs (complex information set computer)
What are 2 differences between mobile devices and desktops/laptops?
- User-replaceable parts are not offered
- Can’t upgrade mobile devices
Burst shots are good for what type of subject?
a fast-moving subject and action shots
Mobile devices commonly have more than one ___ to enable noise cancelling routines
more than one microphone
(but not traditional portables)
What’s a digitizer?
the component that uses a grid of sensors to provide the touch part of a touchscreen
What are 3 ways to track a mobile device’s location?
- GPS
- Cellular
- Wi-Fi
What tech does the free iPhone feature Find my iPhone use?
Uses GPS
What is geotracking?
when mobile OSs track and record your location for an extended amount of time
What is an accelerometer?
measures movement in space (is the phone in motion)
What is a gyroscope?
notices whether the device is oriented up, down or sideways (screen rotation uses this)
