Leg Locks & transitions Flashcards
Open guard to honey hole position
Standing in someone’s guard with both legs inside with one leg forward and one back back step with the back leg which will cause one leg to step on the outside of one of the legs, next kneel down on the leg on the outside and pull your opponent towards your and sit back, while you sit back slip your outside leg underneath both legs and lock your legs crossed together then move into to attack either ankle
Open guard to double outside ashi garami
When in your opponents guard standing grab both their ankles and step with your front leg over the opponents leg the same side that your back leg is on sit back and then cross your leg on the inside underneath your leg on the outsides knee crease to more into double outside ashi gorami, its called this because both of your legs are on the outside of your opponents and its hard for your opponent to heel hook you be easy for you to attack your opponents heels
Double outside ashi garami to heel hook
Once you’re in DOA whilst keeping their leg locked to your side with your arm twist your hips towards the inside of your opponents legs then take your elbow from the arm that’s trapping their leg and hide the toes and slide your arm over their heel and get a wrist watch grip behind their heel and grip with the other hand to finish just extend the hips forwards and look back and up
Double outside ashi Garami to single leg x guard leg lock
When in DOA it makes it easy for your opponent to sit up and possibly mount you so to try and prevent this we move into single leg x guard by taking the leg on the outside and putting our heel on the opponents hip crease with our knee facing out then we take the leg on the inside foot and hook It under the far sides opponents leg and point the knee in the same direction as the other knee and lock the knee and heel together, next we grab the leg were attacking and lift it into our armpit and then loop our arm under the opponents Achilles whilst trapping the toes with our elbow and rest out hand on our chest which will trap their heel then we fall onto the elbow of the arm that’s trapped the heel and push the hips forwards and look up and back to finish
Single leg x guard to reaping leg to leg lock
Because our opponent can escape for the single leg x guard fairly easily we aim to reap their leg, we do this by grabbing their free leg at the ankle then with our inside leg open the hip push their leg out slightly creating some space on the inside of their legs then we swing our leg on the outside and slide it between the opponents leg and under the far side leg then we lock it under our other leg from here we can get the same wrist watch grip and finish
Reaping leg to honey hole leg lock
From the reaping leg position we lean back and lift the opponents leg to the other side of our body then we grab the other leg and attack that leg as we aren’t reaping that leg and its not illegal to attack it. We can attack this leg with a normal wrist watch heel hook or with a straight leg lock by letting the heel slip whilst implementing the straight leg lock for more leverage
Reaping leg to 50/50 guard
From the leg reaping position with both of the oppoents legs on one side of our body we then take our outside leg and bring it back on the outside and take the inside leg and bring it on the outside as well and then cross over the legs the same as the DOA but here we both had a leg on the outside and one on the inside which means we have equal attacking opportunities
Outside heel hook rotational transition to heel knee bar
When in the outside heel hook position whether it’s DOA or single leg x guard one of the most likely things that your opponent will do when you’re going for the heel hook is to spin their body the same way that you’re apply the pressure on their heel to stop the submission, this will cause your opponents back to be facing your and their leg and heel to spin which will make it very difficult for you to finish with outside heel hook but you can now move into the heel knee bar submission. For this submission we must keep a grip on the opponents heel and keep it by the same side as we had it for the outside heel hook and lock a figure four with out legs and keep it locked high on the opponents hips to make it harder for them to get their knee and leg out, next you can extend the hips to finish here. Again the opponent may spin another 180 degrees and end up back on their back and we can then grab a wrist watch grip on the heel and go for the inverted heel hook on the other side.
Toe hold rotational transition to knee bar
When in a leg entanglement place the hand that’s on the floor over the opponents toes then feet your other hand under the opponents heel in a figure four and grab your other wrist like a kimora then twist and rev your hand to finish here. As is very similar to the outside heel hook, the opponent will spin their body to escape the toe hold and this time you will end up with the opponents leg in the middle of your body after they’ve spun so they’re facing the opposite way to you and the same as the heel knee bar you lock a figure four with your legs around your opponent tight to their hip to stop the knee and leg escaping and then take a similar grip on the opponents heel as you would an arm bar and then extend your hips to finish. Again the opponent may spin another 180 degrees and end up back on their back and we can then grab a wrist watch grip on the heel and go for the inverted heel hook on the other side.
Conventional knee bar/lat knee bar off to the side inside rotational transition to inverted heel hook
when attacking a with a conventional knee bar I’m sitting on on my opponent facing away, I then grab one leg and lock my legs in the bum area around that leg I then fall off to the same side as the leg I’m attacking, at this point my opponent will look to spin to stop the attack and when they spin to the inside I get a grip on the leg with my same side arm and I roll the same way as my opponent and once I’ve rolled and I’m looking back up at the sky the opponents heel will be exposed, I can then get a wrist watch grip on the heel and move into the inverted heel submission.
Conventional knee bar/ conventional lat knee bar off to the side outside rotational transition to outside heel hook:
when attacking a with a conventional knee bar I’m sitting on on my opponent facing away, I then grab one leg and lock my legs in the bum area around that leg I then fall off to the same side as the leg I’m attacking, at this point my opponent will look to spin to stop the attack, if I’m controlling the toes they may decide the only way they can spin is the outside and when they spin to the outside once they’ve completed the spin I move into the outside heel hook by getting a wristwatch grip on the heel and extending my hips to finish.
Double trouble knee bar rotational transition to inverted heel hook
When attacking with a double trouble knee bar I’m sitting on my opponent the same as I would be if I was just attacking with a conventional knee back but instead of grabbing on leg I grab both legs and fall to one side, next I grab the leg on top and I wrap it behind my lat so I can move into a lat knee bar whilst also controlling the other leg with my other hand, if my opponent chooses to roll in this situation I can keep hold of both of the leg and roll with him to keep the submission. If I look a grip on the leg that I have ankle control on and my opponent then spins, I can then move into an inverted heel hook and the leg that I have tucked behind my arm next to my lat.
DOA outside heel hook (spinning the leg) to possible conventional knee bar/ toe hold/ outside heel hook
When in the double outside ashi position if I’m attacking with the outside heel hook and the opponent manages to hide their heel which stops my attack I can then grab my opponents leg I’m attacking and twist my hips and body backside 180 degrees and end up sitting on my opponent the same way I would in a conventional knee bar and I can attack with many submission from with point like a knee bar or toe hold or just an outside heel hook again or I can continue spinning and attack the heel again from the opposite side.
Achilles lock
An Achilles lock Is a very effective way to keep control of your opponents leg and a great way to transition into heel hooks if your opponent spins but you must roll with your opponent in an Achilles lock situation because if you don’t roll with your opponent when you have an Achilles lock on their Ankle it makes it very easy for your opponent to escape my spinning if you aren’t spinning with them, if you do spin with them your opponent with expose their heel at some point in the spin allowing you to then transition into a heel hook or a toe hold submission.
Switching legs when attacking facing opponent
When moving into a leg attack if your opponent manages to kick out with their other leg and free their knee then we grab their other leg With both hand and grab and Achilles hold on the leg on either side of the body, the Achilles hold on the ankle will allow us to control to the leg better and transfer into other strong submission such as outside heel hook. next we can lock up our legs around the opponents leg and then we can move into various leg locking submissions.
