Lecture9: Physiology Of Hearing Flashcards
What is the Pitch?
The number of complete vibrations/cycles per second
What is audible pitch/frequency range?
20- 20,000 Hz
Why is the male Frequency?
120hz
What is the female frequency?
250Hz
How do you calculate intensity?
Loudness - volume
What is the normal sound intensity?
50 dB
What is responsible for the characteristic diff in voices?
Overtone
What is Timbre (quality) detected by?
Higher centers
What is the Function of the Ear Pinna?
Sound collection, collecting sound Over a large area and concentrating it in the smaller area of the External Meatus
Describe the External Auditory canal?
A 25mm long torturous tube with 1 end that conducts sounds
How much does the External auditory canal add to the sound?
15-20dB and 2-7 KHz
What is the Tympanic membrane?
Physiological surface area of 55m2
What does the Tympanic membrane do?
Moves in and out in response to Resonators, that being pressure changes related to sound on its exterior surface
How does the external ear provide protection to the chochlea?
Decreases a person’s sens to his own speech (to mask low frequency sounds in loud environments)
What does the Eustachian connect between?
The Middle ear and the Pharynx
