Define CA relationship
Situation when a coach’s and athlete’s cognitions feelings and behaviours are mutually and casually inter related
why do we have these relationships
foundation of coaching

embedded within the complex coaching process
distinguish between an effective and ineffective relationship
Effective -holistic, empathetic understanding, honesty and support
ineffective - lack of interest emotion antagonism deceit and lack of exploration
What is a successful relationship
unambigiously reaching a level of normative performance success
What are Jowett’s 3Cs +1 model
Closeness - affective meanings that the athlete and coach ascribe to their relationship
commitment - intention to maintain the relationship and maximise output
complementarity - corresponding behaviours of affliation and reciprocal behaviours of dominance and submission
co-orientation - interpersonal perceptions / degree of common ground.
what is within co-orientation
Assumed similarity - Athletes perspective on the relationship and what they think the coach is thinking
Actual similarity - athletes perception of the relationship
Empathetic understanding - coaches relationship perception and the athletes perception of the coaches perception
