Define adolescence
A time of action and movement compared with childhood, adolescence is a time of change and newness
What are the 3 aims of adolescence
- to have a sense of identity
- to be autonomous and self regulated
- to be able to form sex and other sex peer relationships
what are the 3 main areas of cognitive change, with other changes
process: performing basic intellectual functions to a higher standard
structure: How thoughts are organised
Content: what adolescents are thinking about
More flexible and selective attention and perception
increased processing speed
enhanced st lt and memory strategies
increased intelligence but maintained IQ
more abstract reasoning
define storm and stress and the 3 areas in which it encompasses
different challenges encountered which help us develop into fully functioning adults;
associated with conflict with parents
mood disruptions
risk behaviors
what are the reasons for storm and stress
Physiological - hormones, gene activation, however not all physiological otherwise everyone would experience it, therefore mainly cultural, where independence is pushed and encouraged
