lecture 3 - Identity Flashcards
Define identity
a key developmental task for adolescence and is viewed as socially constructed mental constructs with a force for action
How does identity foreclosure occur
When we refuse to explore other options and choose to follow the innate identity given to us by our parents .
Or commit to ideologies without exploring meaningful alternatives first
Why does identity foreclosure happen in sport
Spending extensive time in sport with those with similar beliefs aspirations and goals with continual recognition for sporting accomplishments leading to the isolation.
Define athletic identity
The degree to which an individual identifies with the athlete role
properties: descriptive characteristics of athletic identity
processes; dynamic elements that act/change identity
products; outcomes when athletic identity plays a major role
What is the impact of athletic identity on academics
Less academic commitment, therefore decreased adjustment to transitions, burnout is more likely due to increased expectations and pressure to be successful.
Define ego strength and identity
Identity; developed via human interactions and how individuals become more conscious of themselves
strength; becoming more competent in all areas of life
Explain Erikson’s model
adolescence is identity vs role confusion, adolescents need to go through identity crises to form identity
Expand on marcia
4 areas in which an adolescent can go through
Identity diffusion; doesn’t seem to know or care about their identity and therefore aren’t actively exploring
Identity foreclosure; premature identity formation
moratorium; actively exploring options whilst differing commitments
achievement; explored alternatives and committed
Define a dual career
Requirement for athletes to initiate, develop and finalize a elite sporting career as a part of life long career
can be either sporting school, home school fitted around training or normal school with training fitted around it
3 different paths an athlete can go down
Linear - only sporting career
convergent - sporting career with other activities and sport is superior
Parallel - sport and other = important
Benefits of dual careers
Great life balance by limiting identity foreclosure and provides emotional and social adjustment
Negatives of dual careers
Time demands, fatigue and motivation losses
