Define burnout
A withdrawal from sport noted by a reduced sense of accomplishment, devaluation of sport and physical and psychological exhaustion
define Smith’s cognitive affective model
Follows the stress process, stressors, primary and secondary appraisal, physiological response usually tension anger depression anxiety. leading to decreased performance
Describe Silva’s overtraining & staleness model
Firstly it focuses on the physiological state of training
Athletes are placed under training stress, if imposed too frequently = negative psychophysiological response which leads to plateau, leads to staleness, to over come this coaches may add demand or increase intensity which leads to overtraining and lots of negative responses, burnout then withdrawal.
Schmidt and steins commitment based model
burnout has decreased rewards increased costs low satisfaction and alternatives and high investment
