What does a clinical psychologist do?
-work with individuals with various mental/ physical health problems
- aim to improve their everyday functioning and wellbeing
- primarily work in NHS settings as a part of a multidisciplinary team
- also sometimes carry out research
What are some important skills for clinical psychologists to have?
- communication
- interpersonal skills
- critical analysis
- teamwork
- organisation
- problem solving
What is the clinical psychology approach?
- assessment
- formulation
- intervention e.g. CBT
- evaluation
What qualifications do you need to become a clinical psychologist?
- need a doctorate in clinical psychology
- this qualification is highly competitive
What are the requirements for a doctorate in clinical psychology?
- a minimum of a 2:1 BPS accredited degree
- a masters degree
- relevant work experience (preferably the role of an assistant psychologist)
What is reflective practice?
The skill of actively focusing on an experience or action and critiquing it
Why is reflective practice an important skill for a psychologist?
- the BPS say that psychologists need to be self aware and be able to appraise and reflect on their own practice
- psychologists should be trying to develop insight that could inform future actions
What are Koshy et al (2017) steps of reflecting?
- the situation - think about what happened, order of events, own actions etc.
- emotional states - what were you feeling at the time
- make sense of the situation - why do you think things happened the way they did
- critical analysis - if you were to do it again what would you repeat and what would you do differently
- plans for changing practice - what will you do differently in the future and why
- put plans into practice and reflect again - when a comparable situation arises see if any of the changes worked better
