Lecture 8 Flashcards
what is aerobic respiration?
Aerobic respiration is the breakdown of
glucose using oxygen, and yielding water,
carbon dioxide, and energy
where does cellular respiration takes place ?
This process takes place in the cytoplasm, as
well as in the mitochondrion
where does glycolysis takes place?
cytoplasm
For each glucose molecule that undergoes
glycolysis, the cell gains…
2 ATP molecules available for immediate use
– 2 3-carbon molecules of pyruvate
– 2 reduced NAD+ molecules termed NADH
what are 3 distinct
series of reactions of glycolysis?
priming reactions
cleavage reactions
oxidation reaction
what is the priming reaction?
These first reaction require an input of energy in order “prime” glucose for its future energy productionIn these reactions 2 ATP molecules will be used to “prime” glucose
what is the cleavage reaction?
The phosphorylated glucose in cleaved into
two 3-carbon sugars
what does the oxidation reaction in glycolysis?
The 3-carbon sugars are oxidized to
produce two NADH molecules, An organic phosphate is added to each of the
sugars
– Two ATPs are produced by substrate level
phosphorylation (for each 3-carbon sugar)
