Lecture 10 Flashcards
What is aerobic respiration?
use of electrons transport and chemiosmosis to combine electrons and protons carried by NADH with oxygen to form water
What is anaerobic respiration?
when electrons carried by NADH are transferred to compounds other than oxygen
What is fermentation?
When oxygen is scarce, organisms use organic compounds as electron acceptors, allowing the recycling of NAD+ and NADH
What is the only energy generation mechanism used during fermentation?
Glycolysis
What is the fermentation in humans?
Lactate fermentation
What is the fermentation in yeast and bacteria ?
alcoholic fermentation
What is photosynthesis?
The process by which cells can harvest the energy from the sunlight to produce energy rich organic compounds
What are the 2 types of photosynthesis?
- oxygenic (produce oxygen)
- anoxygenic (does not produce oxygen)
What the reaction of photosynthesis?
6co2 + 12 h2o >(light)> c6h12o6 + 6 o2 + 6 h2o
Where does photosynthesis occur?
In the leaf
What are pigments?
molecules that absorb light energy in the visible range
What is the most important pigment found in the chloroplast ?
Chlorophyll-a
What can photosynthesis be broken down to?
Know the series of 3 reactions
