Lecture 13 Flashcards
What is a gene?
The unit of inheritance that programs the amino acid sequence of a polypeptide
What are genes made of?
DNA (a nucleic acid made of monomers called nucleotides)
What are the 2 types of nucleic acids?
DNA and RNA
What is a nucleoside?
the nitrogenous base with the sugar
what is a nucleotide?
the nucleoside (nitrogenous base + sugar) including phosphate group
What are the 2 types of nitrogenous base?
pyrimidines (C,T,U) and Purines (A,G)
What is the sugar of DNA?
deoxyribose
What is the sugar of RNA?
ribose
What is thee shape of a DNA molecule?
double helix (antiparallel 5’»_space; 3’)
What are the complementary base pairing in DNA?
A-T and G-C
What are the differences between RNA and DNA? (3)
- DNA double strand double helix) where RNA is single strand
- In RNA T is changed to U
- DNA sugar is deoxyribose and the RNA sugar is ribose
- base pairing on DNA is on different strands where the base-pairing on RNA is on the same strand
