What is integrated threat theory?
Major cause of prejudice is threat/fears. There are 4 types of threats
What are the 4 types of threats?
1) Realistic
2) Symbolic
3) Intergroup anxiety
4) Negative stereotypes
What are realistic threats?
Feeling nervous about the economy, safety, wellbeing etc
What are symbolic threats?
Feeling threatened by beliefs and values, religious outgroups
What is intergroup anxiety?
Anxiety about interacting with a member of a different group
What are negative stereotypes?
Negative beliefs about members of another group
What type of threat most strongly predicts prejudice?
Intergroup anxiety (r=.46)
Why does intergroup anxiety predict prejudice?
1) Person has little contact with the outgroup and forms perceptions of them based on this
2) Person has had negative experiences with the outgroup
What can intergroup anxiety lead to?
Both an avoidance of outgroup, and prejudice. Avoidance leads to more intergroup anxiety which leads to more prejudice
What is self anxiety?
Anxiety over thinking or doing something that is prejudiced. Happens more so to the dominant group
What type of response is associated with self anxiety?
Freezing in response to an intergroup interaction.
What is other anxiety?
Anxiety that the other might do something to you. More so the non-dominant group
What is other anxiety associated with?
Negative affect, prejudice, and avoidance of outgroup
What is disgust?
Revulsion caused by something unpleasant or offensive. Very powerful. There are both universal and culturally influenced disgusts.
What is core disgust?
Concerns about ingestion and protecting body from disease/infection
