What is intergroup relations?
Relations between groups in society-both good parts and bad parts.
What are stereotypes?
Beliefs about characteristics, attitudes and behaviours of certain groups. Repetitive process that has cognitive benefits, but bad social outcomes. Can come from nowhere.
What is prejudice?
An attitude towards people based on group membership
What is discrimination?
A behaviour towards people based on group membership.
What is stereotypic inaccuracy?
Overestimating the degree to which groups differ on a stereotypic dimension; an exaggeration of group differences.
What is dispersion inaccuracey?
Underestimating the degree to which individuals are dispersed along a continuum. Overgeneralization, underestimating variability.
What is valence inaccuracy?
Overestimating the evaluative difference between groups. Larger group differences favouring ones own group, smaller when favouring others.
What types of prejudice cause bad outcomes?
Negative and ambivalen
What can cause us to have attitudes of prejudice?
They can be automatic, from experience, cultural, personality, if you’ve ever felt threatened.
What types of discrimination exist?
Interpersonal, organizational, institutional
What is systemic discrimination?
Affects all aspects of society. Laws, justice system, schools, media, culture.
