What is collective guilt?
Group based emotion experienced when people categorize themselves as members of a group that has committed unjustified harm to another-felt when behaviour of the group is inconsistent with norms and values cherished by the group
What is collective guilt linked to?
Alleviation of intergroup inequality
How does guilt motivate an individual to take corrective action?
Using the process of self-regulation, but can also result in defense mechanisms
What were some of the consequences of residential schools?
Increased risk of AIDS/HIV today. Loss of culture and marginalization as a factor
How is racial inequality maintained?
Through different idologies that rationalize and legitimize and sustain a pattern of unequal distribution.
What is the idea of meritocracy?
Outcomes are contingent on input-idea that racially disadvantaged groups are responsible for their lack of success due to cultural or biological inaccuracies.
Where does the idea of meritocracy fall short?
When groups are discriminated against
Why do we experience guilt?
When we perceive that our behaviour has failed in relation to a set of standards, norms, values, or goals. We only experience it if we feel personally responsible.
How do e avoid collective guilt?
By distancing ourselves from the group or denying wrong doing/minimizing impact of wrongful act.
Which group is more motivated to eliminate guilt?
The unfairly advantaged group due to the fact that they don’t want to change
What can collective guilt do more so than personal guilt?
Leave room for pyschological manoevering
What are the 2 interpretations of egalitarianism?
1) Meritocracy view
2) Belief in equal opportunity
How can a belief in equal opportunity also legitimize racial ideologies?
The belief that differential levels of hardwork produce inequalities, but everyone still has equal oppornities.
What combination creates collective guilt?
Equal opportunity and social responsibility.
