The value people place on breastfeeding. The view that women should be nurturing predicts men’s support for breastfeeding in private, and oppositions to public breastfeeding
What are the 2 complementary categories of sexism theory?
1) Hostile sexism
2) Benevolent sexism
What is hostile sexism?
Expresses antipathy and aggression towards women who are viewed as trying to usurp men’s power
What is benevolent sexism?
Superficially positive view that sees women as refined and morally superior to men, but also helpless and in need of protection. Encourages women to buy into subordinate role. Fosters traditional gender roles
What do hostile and benevolent sexism both correlate with?
Negatively: With support for womens reproductive rights
Positively: with proscriptive beliefs about women’s autonomy during pregnancy
What does hostile sexism correlate with?
Correlates positively with the belief that men should be able to override reproductive decisons
What does benevolent sexism correlate with?
Did not correlate with oppositions towards breastfeeding in public. Predicted women’s (not men’s) opposition to public breastfeeding.
