Lecture 6 Flashcards
Name a plant that can grow on riverbanks
Willows
T/F: coniferous trees (e.g. black/white spruce) are found throughout the HBL
F: found in the boreal forest component
Birds found in spruce forests in the HBL
- Boreal Chickadee
- Canada Jay
- Spruce Grouse
- Black-backed Woodpecker
- White-winged crossbill
Animals that eat seeds in the HBL
- White-winged crossbill
- Red squirrel
Predatory animals in the HBL
- Great Grey Owl
- Northern Hawk Owl
- Weasels (northern fisher, American marten, wolverine)
Wolverines’ adaptations to live in the HBL
- Large hind feet to get around on snow
- Small ears, large bodies
Why are forests found in older areas of the HBL?
- Longer period of rebound
- Better drainage
Where are freshwater marshes found?
Inland
Salt marshes - what adaptations do organisms found there have?
Form due to salt edge on the coast of James Bay - organisms have salt glands (e.g. LeConte’s/Nelson’s Sparrow)
Does the edge of James Bay have a uniform habitat?
No; some inlets have a developed area w/goosegrass (a halophyte with thick, fleshy leaves)
Marine organisms found in James Bay
- Algae
- Jellyfish
- Beluga
Mud flats
- Visible when water recedes
- Filled with invertebrates - important feeding site for sandpipers
This birds poses a danger to migrating sandpipers:
Peregrine falcons
This endangered sandpiper feeds in James Bay before heading to Chesapeake Bay
Red knot
Why is James Bay important in ON?
- Marine environment with plants/animals
- Feeding ground for migrating sandpipers, some of which nest near Hudson Bay and most of which nest in the Arctic
