Lecture 5 Flashcards
What can CVS do?
Test fluid or tissue around the fetus that’ll allow us to determine if a child has a genetic disease
What makes IVF and filtering out unwanted genes so difficult?
Incomplete dominance and co-dominance, polygenic traits. And the fact that there is no “trait” for complex behaviours like criminal behaviour, autism, personality, depression etc
What are polygenic traits?
Tons of genes that code for 1 thing (ex: eye colour)
What are monozygotic twins?
One zygote split into 2. Identical DNA and appearance.
What are dizyogtic twins?
2 eggs are released forming 2 zygotes. Not identical DNA, but same prenatal environment
What do family genetics look at?
Correlations-look at both parents trait and childs trait to come up with a relationship
What are some issues with family genetics?
There’s also the environment involved-what part of our genes is familial and what part is genetic? ex: Obesity has no genetic basis, but runs in families.
What do twin studies look at?
How correlations differ with siblings, fraternal twins, and identical twins.
What is an interesting thing about IQ in adopted kids?
Adopted kids have a similar IQ to their adopted parents in childhood, but similar to biological parents when adults
How can environment impact phenotype?
Examples: MAOA gene-if you have it and are exposed to abuse in childhood, you are more likely to act violently as an adult-however, gene only unlocks violent potential when exposed to violence as a kid
If someone has PKU but follows dietary guidelines, they won’t have brain damage
How does classroom climate affect anxious kids?
Shyness and anxiety have a biological basis-kids don’t engage. But if you have a positive classroom experience, both non-anxious and anxious kids engaged more, but it helped the anxious kids the most!
