lecture 4: sensory systems Flashcards
discriminative information
the ability to tell two point apart on skin
non-discriminative information
crude touch - simply the sense of being touched. pain and temp
dorsal funiculus
carries discriminative information via -
cuneate fasiculus: body above legs
gracile fasiculus: lower body
proprioception
discrimiantive information, where body is positioned, what it is feeling on outside
purpose of thalamus
to package information of pain, temp and senses and send to cortex. Filters so you can focus on what is important
brown sequard syndrome
where one side of spinal chord damaged but not other. information that doesn’t go through lesion will reach brain
associative sensory loss
lesion in brain stem, both information from the opposite side lost
decussation
where information carried crosses to other side of body
dissociative sensory loss
lesion to a single tract in the spinal cord which involves preservation of fine touch and proprioception with selective loss of pain and temperature
