events in the ovary
A
- primordial oocyte surrounded by folicular or pre-granulosa cells. dormant and sit in little groupings
- some grow to become primary follicles. active
- follicles develop in the presence of FSH
- secondary follicle develops with antrum
- mature follicle - oocyte almost completely suspended in fluid and size is increasing. begins to bulge on surface of ovary
- slow release of oocyte
- empty follicle breaks down to form corpus luteum
- corpus albicans forms and is slowly absorbed by ovary over weeks to months
