lecture 4 kant Flashcards
U have 4 species under the moral law
1- respect property of other
2-the speech that u say
3-the life of others
4- the relation that u have with others
We have 3 formaulations of the moral law (3 faces of the moral law)
1-Act as if ur maxim will hold without at the same time as a universal law
2-Act as if ur maxim will hold without contradiction as a law of nature (for bodily activities like homosexuality)
3-act as if u make others as ends not as means
Can u eaet burgers, can u make argile, can u jog ,can u play football
yes, it is all permissable actions
I have the freedom of choice ( end i want burger, pizaa, salad..)
it is all permissable ( as long as it is in conformity with morality)
Inside the permissable u have
actions that are recommended and actions that are not recommended(smoking and doing nothings vs doing sports )
Recommended actions
actions that will bring u closer to God , morality and reason
How many natures we have
We have triple natures:
animals
rational
adamic nature (pure reason)
All the actions that bring u to reason (adamic nature ) and rationality are recommended actions
true
kant says (u are free to choose ur ends (apples vs cheeseburger) but if u chose universal ends u will be better person
ends cant be duty (not the moral ones) (apple is not a duty) (permissable ends)
Duties can be ends
u can choose freely ends that are universal (recommended duties
Recommended duties toward urself
1-be perfect
2-be holly
3-inspect urself (look inside urself)
What u should inspect
u should inspect what pertains to ur body and what pertains to ur reason
u have to preserve ur body, ur reason and ur species under the moral law of course
why life is valuable for kant
life is valuable for kant in order to practice morality (for u and for the generations to practice it also)
doing drugs is a faultbecause it harms body but it is not against moral law
Suicide is not allowed
because u are murdering urself for the animal and law of ends and means
Masturbation is not allowed
against law of nature and law of ends and means
