Lecture 4 Flashcards
What makes a test good?
reliable
valid
safe
reproducible
transferability (quantitative to qualitative)
Reliability of muscle testing of cervical spine
Lack of fixed axis
multiple axes of motion
lack of bilaterally
No identifiable prime movers
Precautions of MMT
language/cognitive barrier
age
cultural, social, gender differences
psychological states
different settings
pain in area
testing disrupts healing
Contraindications of MMT
Joint instability/dislocation
acute inflammation
unhealed fracture
severed osteoporosis
postoperative restrictions
acute equipment
Capital Extension MMT
Position: prone with head off end of table. arms at sides
Test: Extends head by tilting chin upward. Patient looks at wall
Forearm swoops head downward. Other hand is under chin
Cervical Extension MMT
Position: prone w/head off end of table. arms at sides
Test: Extends neck w/out tilting chin. Look at the floor, while pushing up on PT hand
Forearm pushes hand directly downwards, chin under hand
Cervical Flexion MMT
Position: patient supine, patient tucks chin and lifts head.
Test: PT pushes forehead in rotational torque direction.
Cue for chin tuck
Deep Neck Flexor Endurance Test
Patient is supine, hook lying.
Tuck chin maximally. Patient raises head at least 1 in off table. Hold as long as possible
Cue for chin tuck or head height. Test ends if they can’t maintain.
DNF healthy populations
M > 40 sec
F > 30 sec
DNF identifying w/neck pain
< 20 sec
Cervical Spine Rotation MMT
Position: supine, patient rotates head to one side
PT tries to turn head back to middle.
Why do we test thoracolumbar spine?
foundation for force transference between upper and lower body
Poor core stability and endurance to be linked to increased rates of low back pain and extremity injury
Trunk extension of lumbar spine MMT
Fingertips touch side of head, shoulders in external rotation.
Test: patient extends lumbar spine until entire trunk is raised from table. Clears belly button. Come up as high as they can from table.
PT: holds ankles or hips/across pelvis
Trunk extension thoracic spine MMT
Pt scoots so that their nipple line is at the edge of the table. Hands touches head, elbows/shoulders are retracted.
PT holds ankles. Pt raises head, shoulders, and chest to table level. Be careful of lumbar extension
Sorensen Lumbar Spine Extension Test
Pt hangs over the table, between belly button and ASIS. Lower extremities are held down to table by PT. Pt lifts head, chest, and trunk from table. Horizontal position at least.
