Lecture 15 Flashcards
Lat length test
pt supine with LE extended. Reach overhead keeping elbows straight and arms close to head
PT brings pts knees to chest to prevent lumbar extension and pt repeats movement
watch for elbows flexing, shoulders drift into abduction, asymmetry
Pec major muscle length test
measure posterior aspect of olecranon to table. no norms exist so you are looking for asymmetry or change over time
pec minor muscle length test
measure posterior aspect of the acromion to table. no norms exist so you are looking for asymmetry or change over time
Triceps muscle length test
lateral epicondyle, radial styloid, lateral aspect of acromion
no norms exist
watch to make sure they maintain shoulder flexion when elbow flexes
thoracic rotation test
lumbar spine is locked
knees are together and LEs flexed to minimize lumbar motion
measuring side hand is placed on sternum, behind head, or on lumbar spine
overhead athletes, golfers, swimmers: look for 60° and/or asymmetry
valid and reliable compared to seated rotation test
upper extremity prone shoulder lift test
overhead athletes, swimmers
measure distance from ulnar styloid to table. assess for symmetry
upper extremity 1 min push-up test
ACSM standard: as many reps as you can do w/out stopping
cooper test: as many as you can do in 1 minute
chest must get within 6” of ground
lower extremity foot intrinsics
toe dexterity, toe spreading, short foot
improves somatosensory/proprioceptive control. increase arch height in 6 weeks, improve center of pressure excursion, improve knee movement variability
Short foot exercise
heel must not slide posterior
1st MTP must maintain contact with ground
minimize DIP flexion and other LE motion
arch should visibly lift
you should progress from sitting, standing bilateral, standing unilateral, functional activity
Timed up and go test
mobility/balance function test
stand from chair, walk around a cone 3 meters away and sit back down
assistive device allowed. guarding required. timer starts when you say GO and ends when they sit back down. practice trial allowed, fastest trial recorded
Normative values TUG
<10s, pt freely mobile
>30s, pt is dependent for mobility
>9s, predictive of developing disability within 2 years
>12s, at risk for falling
Berg balance test
easy to administer, clinically relevant, can provide specific ideas for interventions, guarding required
equipment: stop watch, ruler, chair w/armrests, step/stool
HIGH intra- and interrater reliability.
score <45 is predictive of falls
