Lecture 32 - Skin Flashcards
Urticaria?
unstable mast cells in dermis, multiple causes e.g. allergy, drugs, cold), autoimmune version where antibodies bind and degranulate
Dermo-epidermal junction?
herni desmosomes anchor epidermis to dermis
Bullous pemphigoid?
autoimmune, formation of antibodies against hemi desmosomal proteins, neural skin and muscular forms of antigen, impaired BBB lead to antibody production
Pemphigus vulgaris?
IgG antibodies attacking keratinocytes desmosome -> superficial and oral erosions
Colourful screening tool?
direct immunoflourescence - shows intradermal IgG deposition in pemphigus (chicken hook) and linear light up in bullous
Atopic excema?
inhibited conversion of profilggarin into filggarin due to mutation -> decreaed natural moisturising factor
Allergic contact dermatitis?
hx of atopic dermatitis more susceptible due to defects in epidermal barrier, patch test helps identify antigen for prevention
Reasons patients are immunosuppressed?
treat severe disease, result of disease, organ transplant
Diagnositc tools n skin disease/
swab culture (bacteria and virus), skin biopsy, blood culture
Painful rash?
disseminated varicellar zoster virus, treated w aciclover
Squamous cell cancer epidemiology?
immune suppressed have reduced repair of UV damage -> squamous cell carcinoma in cells highly exposed to the sun
