Lecture 3 - Fever and Cough: Upper Respiratory Tract Infection Flashcards
Streptococcus bacteria?
pyogenus (pharyngitis only, rheumatic fever risk) and pneumoniae (otitis media, pneumonia, sinusitis)
Viruses of upper respiratory tract?
rhinoviruses, coronaviruses, respiratory syncytial viruses, influenza - widespread anatomically than bacteria
S. Pyogenes pharyngitis signs?
high fever, pain, dysphagia, adenopathy, redness
Identifying s. pyogenus?
clear beta haemolysis on petri dish (Group A)
Typical course of viral URI?
fever for 2-3 days of onset, cough for 7-10 days, rhinorrhoea that progresses from clear to purulent to clear over 1-2 weeks
Viral pharyngitis signs?
diffuse illness: rhinorrhea, hoarse voice, cough, conjunctival signs
Haemolysis of blood agar?
partial, green alpha haemolysis = s. pneumoniae, complete clear beta haemolysis = s. pyogenes, no haemolysis = enterococcus faecalis
