Lecture 30 Flashcards
1
Q
Mark Recapture
A
- Capture and mark a number of individuals
- release marked animals and allow them to mix
- recapture a number of individuals and determine the fraction that are already marked
- estimate population size assuming fair sampling of population
2
Q
Mark Recapture Equation
A
M2/n2=n1/N
-N1 = number caught and marked in first capture
-M2 = number of marked individuals caught in 2nd capture
-N2 = number of total individuals caught in 2nd capture
N = estimate of total population size
3
Q
General Growth Equation
A
dN/dt = (B-D) xN dN/dt = change in the number of population over change in time b= average birth rate d= average death rate N= number of individuals at current time R = B-D = per capita growth rate
4
Q
Intrinsic Rates of Increase
A
rate of increase of a species under r max
- populations do not increase at r max
5
Q
Carrying Capacity
A
maximum population size that a particular environment can sustain
6
Q
Logistic Growth Model
A
dN/dt = R0Nx((K-N)/K) K = carrying capacity R0 = rate of growth when population is very small
7
Q
Discrete Growth
A
Nt = N0 lambda ^t
8
Q
Stable Population Structure
A
lambda = R0/g G = generation time R0 = net reproductive rate of the population
