lecture 3 epidermis Flashcards
what are some functions of skin
protects from water, sun, vitamin d, sensory receptors, excretion, body temp, friction, fastens things down
what are some characteristics of the epidermis
avascular, few nerve cells, sup and deep layers, ectodermal embryonic origin,
what is the most abundant cell in the epidermis and where is it produced?
keratinocytes, in the basal layer
what kind of sensory cell would you find in the epidermis?
a merkel cell (fine touch)
what are some characteristics of the stratum basale of the epidermis?
merkel, vitamin d, malanocytes, actively dividing cells
what are some functions of dermis?
flexure, blood vessels and nerves, skin tone and toughness
what are the two layers of dermis?
papillary, and reticular
what kind of sense organs do you find in the dermis?
paccinian corpuscles (pressure), ruffini endings (heat and stretch), free nere endings, merkels,
function of the hypodermis:
areolar and adipose tissue, loose CT and insulate
what three things contribute to skin color?
melanin, carotene hemoglobin
what are the three types and difference of exocrine glands?
merocrine (exocytosis, sweat) halocrine where whole cell breaks down (sebacious) apaocrine
differences in first, second, third degree burn
upper epidermis only, upper epidermis as well, third is all skin (may not hurt because you kill nervs)
what is the embryological origin of melanocytes?
neural crest cells
