Lecture 3 Flashcards
What are the principles of sampling? (8)
- Obtain sample from site of infection & min contamination
- Collect sample at the correct time
- Collect sufficient quantity of sample (but not too much)
- Use an appropriate collection device
- Obtain cultures before administration of a/bs
- Make smears in addition to cultures
- Label
- Don’t put others in danger
What is the goal of a diagnostic micro lab?
To provide therapeutic guidance
Susceptible
When a patient has an infection with a susceptible organism, there is a high likelihood of clinical success when treated with a drug according to the drug label indication
Resistant
When a patient has an infection with a resistant organism, clinical failure is predicted when treated with a drug according to the label indication
Min inhibitory [ ] (MIC)
lowest [ ] of an a/b which inhibits bacterial growth
Intrinsic resistance
Constitutive for an organism
Acquired resistance
Organisms don’t have something hereditary, they acquired something that makes them “super”
What are the susceptibility test models? (2)
Categorial methods
Quantitative methods
Categorial susceptibility test methods
Indicates if organism is susceptible or resistant
Quantitative susceptibility test methods
Indicates how susceptible or resistant an isolate is
Achieved by acquiring an MIC
