Lecture 27: The Venous System Flashcards
Is BP higher or lower in the venous system
lower
Do veins have a lot of myogenic tone?
Nope
Since veins don’t have a lot of myogenic tone?
- Highly stretchable
- Have little elastic recoil
- Easily distend to accommodate add. volumes of blood with only a small increase in venous pressure
Venous return
The volume of blood entering each atrium per min from the veins
Venous return is influenced by (9)
- Venous capacity
- Bulk flow across capillary walls
- Renin-anggiotensin-aldosterone system (hormones)
- Sympathetic nervous system
- Gravity
- Skeletal muscle pump
- One way valve
- Respiratory pump
- Cardiac suction
Venous capacity
Volume of blood the veins can accommodate
Venous capacity is influenced by
- Distensibility of vein walls
2. Externally applied pressure squeezing inwardly on the veins
Sympathetic nervous system - Arteriolar vasoconstriction
reduced flow through vessels because of their increased resistance
Sympathetic nervous system - Venous constriction
Increases blood flow through these vessels because of their decreased capacity
Moving from a lying down to an upright position
- Decreases the cardiac output
- Decreases the MAP
- Sympathetically induces venous constriction
The respiratory pump
- During inspiration, there is a decrease in the pressure in the thoracic cavity and an increase in abdominal pressure
- Increase in gradient between abdomen and the thorax forces venous blood from the ab area to the thorax
Cardiac suction
- Caused by rapid expansion of the ventricular chambers during ventricular relaxation
- Increases venous return
