Lecture 22 Flashcards
What is step 1 to a reflex arc?
Stimulation of a receptor
What is step 2 to a reflex arc?
Activation of a sensory neuron
What is step 3 to a reflex arc?
Information processing in the CNS
What is step 4 to a reflex arc?
Activation of a motor neuron
What is step 5 to a reflex arc?
Responses of a peripheral effector
Describe a spinal reflex/ reflex arc
Organised neural circuit
Contained within spinal cord
Reproducible automatic response to a particular stimulus
In the muscle spindle what does a stretch reflex do to a muscle?
shortening of a muscle
What occurs in a withdrawal reflex?
There is a painful stimulus which sends a signal to the ganglion, then the extensors are inhibited and flexors are stimulated as they need to leave the area of pain.
Does reflex movement have a simple or complex synaptic connection?
Simple because it needs to be extremely fast.
How is muscle tension controlled?
Motor unit recruitment is the primary way and controlling the stimulation frequency
What occurs when you are PREPARING for movement
The cerebellum coordinates muscles, guided by sensory feedback, compares intended movement with actual result, helps maintain posture and gaze, helps learn and automate movements. It gets information from the premotor cortex and decisions on the frontal lobe
Can you change the brains structure? if so why?
When you are training the brain you are learning new things meaning the brain has to remember them therefore changing the brains structure
What does the cerebellum do while we perform other actions?
It monitors balance and equilibrium and adjust upper motor neuron activity
What does the cerebellum do during performance?
Cerebellum compares sensory feedback about the actual movement to intended movement, and signals adjustments to primary motor cortex
