Lecture 2 Flashcards
5 steps of natural selection
- Individuals differ
- More individuals than resources
- Offspring resembles parents
- Individuals have features that help with survival
- Some individuals are better adapted and offspring inherit adapted features
Sexual selection
features are selected because they are more attractive to partners
Heritability
Percentage of variance in a trait that can be explained by genetic differences between individuals
Heritability of intelligence over time
The heritability of intelligence increases as we get older
Missing heritability of intelligence
We know intelligence has a high heritability but the genes have not been found
Dandelions
Individuals who remain stable under whatever circumstances
Orchids
Individuals who are vulnerable under negative conditions but thrive in positive conditions
Epigenetics
Changes in gene expression that are stable during cell division, sometimes over generations
Chromosomes
Made up of DNA and protein that contain genes
Imprinting
Process soon after birth in which the young of the precocial species follow the first moving object they see
Precocial species
Species of animals where the young are able to move immediately after birth
Ethological approaches
Approaches that emphasize the evolutionary origins of behaviors important for survival
Critical period
Limited period in an animals life where they have to be exposed to learning a skill or it can’t be learned anymore
Nativist-empiricist
Nativism: skills and abilities are innate
Empiricist: not born with built-in core knowledge
Altricial species
Young are incapable of moving when born
