lecture 16- wildlife virology Flashcards
whats a significant problem with finding/testing for wildlife viruses?
you need to test/swab during time of infection, but usually wildlife is found dead afterward
true or false: there is always a cost of being infected by a virus
true
how do bottleneck events relate to viral spread? what are some wildlife examples of this?
animals/populations that have experienced bottleneck events are susceptible to viral disease outbreaks and consequences are severe (because low genetic diversity and smaller populations)
sea lions and herpes virus, free range cheetahs and FIP
how does FIP differ in wildlife in Cypress?
FIPV combo with parvo is infectious (was contained though)
how do viruses impact reintroduction efforts? (what should you be weary of with reintro) use Bandicoots as example
viruses are present in low prevalence in wildlife populations, but when you collect the wild Bandicoots and bring them together it increases stress and increases viral spread AND THEN if you reintroduce animals that are infected with a virus, then an already endangered population could be wiped out
how do the rabies vaccines work? what kind of vaccine are they?
oral vaccines - live vaccines
how do we monitor if wildlife have eaten rabies vaccine
oxytetracycline in vaccine - dyes teeth yellow
what strategy does france use to vaccinate wildlife agaisnt rabies? is this effective? consequences?
vaccine area across france in sections at a time to vaccinate foxes
yes it is effective! however the fox population has really increased
how has the eradication rinderpest influenced Serengeti Savanna?
after eradication of Rinderpest the wildebeest population increased, and Savanna ….. (something about grass growth)
increased Wildebeest also increases lion population
lots of trickledown!
what has spain done to help with rabbit reintroduction after RHD wiped out large populations?
need to build habitats for rabbits, including fences so that carnivores cannot get them
what did australia do by accident with rabbits
introduced RHD and Myxomatosis
come back and add some slides here
what are some examples of dead end hosts for high path AI
foxes, black bears, harbour seals
more about HPAI
what wildlife species do we think about in regard to Sars CoV2?
white tailed deer
