Q

how do bottleneck events relate to viral spread? what are some wildlife examples of this?

A

animals/populations that have experienced bottleneck events are susceptible to viral disease outbreaks and consequences are severe (because low genetic diversity and smaller populations)

sea lions and herpes virus, free range cheetahs and FIP

Q

how do viruses impact reintroduction efforts? (what should you be weary of with reintro) use Bandicoots as example

A

viruses are present in low prevalence in wildlife populations, but when you collect the wild Bandicoots and bring them together it increases stress and increases viral spread AND THEN if you reintroduce animals that are infected with a virus, then an already endangered population could be wiped out
